Life and register readings
The life of Raşid Efendi began in Kilis in 1857/58 (AH 1274). Work began in 1880/81, at about 23, on a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, names Raşid as Kol müşiri, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1887 and 1889 to 1896. Alongside, the lists for 1888/89 give a second post, in Mandali as a district governor (Kaymakam). At the same time, from 1896/97, the lists also place Raşid in Samawah (Semave) as Kaymakam. Alongside, the lists for 1903/04 give a second post, in Al-Hindiya as Kaymakam. The lists have no entry for 1906 to 1908. Alongside, the lists for 1905/06 give a second post, in Al Diwaniyah as Mutasarrıf vekili. The last entries, from 1908 to 1910, name Raşid as Kaymakam, with no place.
Pay rose from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 2,500 in 1887/88, as Kaymakam, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 291,900 kuruş, 5 times what an official on the median salary earned. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 8.1 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more.
