Life and register readings
Mehmed Ali Riyâzi Efendi was born in Medina (Medine) in 1840/41 (AH 1256). The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Mehmed Ali Riyâzi in Medina, the birthplace, as Harem-i Şerif tamirat kâtibi, where the entries run to 1873/74. The lists have no entry for 1864 to 1868. Next came Yanbu (Yenbuülbahr) from 1874 to 1876, then a return to Medina from 1876 to 1878. At the same time, from 1877/78, the lists also place Mehmed Ali Riyâzi in Yanbu as Medine cerâye buğdayı şevne emini. From 1878 to 1905 the annual entries place Mehmed Ali Riyâzi again in Medina. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1906/07. Entries spanning 45 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 450 in 1874/75, the peak, in Yanbu, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 37 years the salaries add up to 96,936 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
