MEHMED MURAD EFENDĠ was born in Antalya in 1873/74 (AH 1290); the father's occupation was "Berber". Work began in Antalya in 1885/86, at about 13. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places MEHMED MURAD EFENDĠ in Antalya, the birthplace, as Düyun-ı Umumiye Müdürlüğü mülazımı, where the entries run to 1890/91.
