Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Lütfi Efendi began in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1868/69 (AH 1285); the father's occupation was "Priştine Bidayet Mahkemesi Ceza Dairesi Başkanı". At about 17, in 1885/86, Mehmed Lütfi began work in Thessaloniki. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmed Lütfi in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, as Vilayet Mektupçu Kalemi stajyeri. For 1886 to 1888 the lists have no entry. Mehmed Lütfi then moved to Drama from 1888 to 1890, then back to Thessaloniki from 1890 to 1903. Alongside, the lists for 1902/03 give a second post, in Thasos as Bidayet Mahkemesi savcı yardımcısı. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1889/90 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 1,000 in 1902/03, in Thasos, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
