Life and register readings
Mehmed Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1829/30 (AH 1245); the father's occupation was "Kavas". At about 48, in 1877/78, Mehmed began work in Varto, on a first salary of 120 kuruş. Fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 48 or older. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, names Mehmed as Kadı yardımcısı, with no place. For 1878 to 1880, 1881 to 1886 and 1887 to 1889 the lists have no entry.
