Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Tahir Efendi began in Varna in 1849/50 (AH 1266). Mehmed Tahir began work in Varna in 1865/66, at about 16. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Mehmed Tahir as Meclis-i Cinayet Odası mülazımı in Varna, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1878. The lists have no entry for 1866 to 1868. Mehmed Tahir then moved to Van from 1879 to 1882. Alongside, the lists for 1881 to 1888 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Bidayet Mahkemesi müddeiumumi muavini. Alongside, the lists for 1887 to 1889 give a second post, in Siirt as Müddeiumumi muavini. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1878 and Azil (dismissal) for 1888/89.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,400 in 1881/82, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 227,280 kuruş, 2.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1888/89.
