Mustafa Şevki Efendi

Born in Harput in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Mustafa Şevki Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 13, in 1873/74, Mustafa Şevki began work. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Mustafa Şevki as Muhasebe kalemi mülazımı and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1885 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1891 give a second post, in Malatya as Polis komiseri vekili. Mustafa Şevki then moved back to Harput, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1895. For 1895 to 1899 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Düyûn-ı Umumiye müdürlüğü başmemur vekili. Next came Milas from 1899 to 1901. Alongside, the lists for 1900/01 give a second post, in Palu as Düyûn-ı Umumiye memuru.

The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 350 in 1889/90, the peak, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 19 years the salaries add up to 61,140 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
