Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Şükrü Efendi began in Vodine in 1855/56 (AH 1272). Work began in Vidin in 1873/74, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mehmed Şükrü in Vidin as Mal kalemi mülazımı. Mehmed Şükrü then moved back to Vodine, the birthplace, from 1880 to 1891. The lists have no entry for 1876 to 1880. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Şükrü to Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1891 to 1896. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1903 give a second post, in Kavala as Emlâk-ı Hümayun Şubesi memuru. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1884/85 and Azil (dismissal) for 1890/91.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 900 in 1902/03, the peak, in Kavala, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 168,600 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
