Life and register readings
Osman Efendi was born in Safranbolu in 1839/40 (AH 1255). Work began in Istanbul in 1878/79, at about 40, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 40 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1878/79, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Osman in the same post, Bâb-ı Âli tanzifat memuru, in Istanbul. Of the 2,755 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 5 per cent stayed in one place throughout.
