Life and register readings

The life of Mehmet Vehbi Efendi began in Silistra (Silistre) in 1864/65 (AH 1281); the father's occupation was "Silistre kazası mal müdürü". At about 18, in 1882/83, Mehmet Vehbi began work in Adapazarı. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mehmet Vehbi as muhasebe kalemi mülazımı and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1882/83 give a second post, in Adapazarı as sandık tahrir kâtibi (geçici). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Vehbi to a post with no place named from 1884 to 1899, with a rise to Düyun-ı Umumiye memuru (becayiş) in 1893/94. For 1891 to 1893 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Jeddah (Cidde) in 1900/01. Jeddah, about 2,750 km from Silistra, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 40 of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
