Life and register readings
Mehmet Arif Bey was born in Istanbul in 1887/88 (AH 1305); the father's occupation was "Harem-i Şerif ve Hazine-i Celile-i Nebevi müdürlüğünden emekli". Work began in Medina (Medine) in 1906/07, at about 18, on a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1906/07, places Mehmet Arif in Medina as Hicaz Demiryolu 28. Şube operatör muavini, where the entries run to 1909/10. At the same time, from 1910/11, the lists also place Mehmet Arif in Sehremaneti as Şehremaneti heyet-i fenniyesi inşaat şubesi operatörü. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1909/10 and Infisal for 1910/11. Medina, about 2,100 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
