Life and register readings

The life of Osman Bey began in Dagistan in 1856/57 (AH 1273); the father's occupation was "Kilim tüccarı". Work began in 1878/79, at about 22, on a first salary of 1,120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, names Osman as a district governor (Kaymakam), with no place. At the same time, from 1881 to 1883, the lists also place Osman in Elmalı as Kaymakam. Alongside, the lists for 1882 to 1885 give a second post, in Mektebi mulkiye as Ser-mubassır. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1887 give a second post, in Gemlik as Kaymakam, with a rise to Kaymakam. Next came Novi Pazar (Yenipazar) and Kilis from 1888 to 1891. Alongside, the lists for 1890 to 1892 give a second post, in Antakya as Kaymakam. The annual lists then follow Osman to nine places in 18 years, from Princes' Islands (Adalar) to Kütahya. Alongside, the lists for 1909/10 give a second post, in İzmit as Mutasarrif. In all, 16 places on two continents, a number reached by only 2 of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.

The salary went from 1,120 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 7,500 in 1896/97, the peak, as Mutasarrif in Genç, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
