Life and register readings
The life of Salih Subhi Efendi began in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1877/78 (AH 1294); the father's occupation was "İşkodra Duyûn-ı Umûmiye İdaresi merkez memuru". Work began in Shkodër in 1897/98, at about 20. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places Salih Subhi in Shkodër, the birthplace, as Duyûn-ı Umûmiye Müdürlüğü mülazımı, where the entries run to 1901/02. At the same time, from 1899 to 1901, the lists also place Salih Subhi in a post with no place named as Duyûn-ı Umûmiye İdaresi kolcusu. The annual lists then follow Salih Subhi to Tuzi (Tuz) from 1901 to 1906. Alongside, the lists for 1904/05 give a second post, in Shëngjin as Duyûn-ı Umûmiye İdaresi memur vekili. The last entry, for 1905/06, names Salih Subhi as Duyûn-ı Umûmiye İdaresi memuru, with no place.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 350 in 1905/06, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 17,400 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
