Life and register readings
Mustafa Hakkı Efendi was born in Komotini (Gümülcine) in 1869/70 (AH 1286); the father's occupation was "İskeçe Kazası Eytam Müdürü". Work began in Xanthi (İskeçe) in 1881/82, at about 13. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Mustafa Hakkı in Xanthi as Ticaret Mahkemesi mülazımı, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The lists have no entry for 1882 to 1885. At the same time, from 1899 to 1902, the lists also place Mustafa Hakkı in Serres (Siroz) as Vergi kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1901 to 1905 give a second post, in Didymoteicho as Mal Muduru, with a rise to Mal Muduru. For 1905 to 1907 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Xanthi again in 1907/08.
The salary went from 125 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 1,000 in 1907/08, the peak, as Mal Muduru in Xanthi, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less.
