Life and register readings
The life of MEHMET NURĠ EFENDĠ began in Seydişehir in 1839/40 (AH 1255); the father's occupation was "Antalya eski naibi". MEHMET NURĠ EFENDĠ began work in Istanbul in 1859/60, at about 20. Pay rose from 1,500 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 2,500 in 1878, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 225 kuruş. After 14 years the salary stood below the first, 400 kuruş against 1,500. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 121,956 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1884/85.
