Life and register readings
Mehmed Ali Efendi was born in Saray Mahallesi, Silifke in 1878 (AH 1295); the father was a farmer (çiftçi). The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, names Mehmed Ali as Sancak Tahrirat Kalemi mukayyidi, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1905 to 1910. At the same time, from 1911, the lists also place Mehmed Ali in Adana as Ziraat Bankası Şubesi evrak mukayyidi vekili.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 450 in 1910/11, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over eight years the salaries add up to 17,880 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1911.
