Life and register readings
Mehmed Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297); the father's occupation was "Sultan Ahmed Camii müezzin-i evveli". Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 15. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmed Tevfik as mülazım (muhasebe kalemi) and no place named. For 1895 to 1899 the lists have no entry. At the same time, from 1900 to 1910, the lists also place Mehmed Tevfik in Istanbul as kâtip (Meclis-i İdare Kalemi). Alongside, the lists for 1909 to 1912 give a second post, in a post with no place named as kadro harici (İnfisal).
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 800 in 1911/12, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 38,640 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911/12.
