Life and register readings

The life of Mahmut Nazmi Efendi began in Kars. The first annual entry, for 1878/79 (AH 1296), places Mahmut Nazmi in Van as Aşar Üçüncü Kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1885. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 2,000 kuruş. Over nine years the salaries add up to 138,840 kuruş, 3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1911.
