Muhammed Şakir Efendi

The life of Muhammed Şakir Efendi began in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1853/54 (AH 1270). Muhammed Şakir began work in 1875/76, at about 21, on a first salary of 400 kuruş. Muhammed Şakir then moved to Karaman and Rhodes (Rodos) from 1883 to 1891. Alongside, the lists for 1890 to 1895 give a second post, in Thessaloniki as Mekteb-i İdadi Dâhiliye Memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1894 to 1900 give a second post, in Latakia as Mekteb-i İdadi Müdürü. Alongside, the lists for 1899/1900 give a second post, in Beirut as Mekteb-i İdadi Müdür Yardımcısı. Six provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.

Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 1,000 in 1877/78, as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru), when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
