Life and register readings
Zarih Efendi was born in Bursa in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Hristiyan community; the father's occupation was "Fermeneci". At about 22, in 1875/76, Zarih began work in Bursa, on a first salary of 190 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Zarih as Bursa sandık veznedarlığı in Bursa, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1877/78. Zarih then moved to Gemlik and Mudanya from 1878 to 1881. The last posts were in Gemlik again from 1881 to 1884. The lists give Infisal for 1883/84 instead of a title.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 250 in 1879/80, the peak, in Mudanya, when one in five paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 19,200 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1883/84.
