Life and register readings

Ohannes Ferid Efendi was born in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1858/59 (AH 1275). At about 25, in 1883/84, Ohannes Ferid began work, on a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, names Ohannes Ferid as Ticaret ve Ziraat Nezareti Tercüme-i Fünun Kalemi memuru, with no place. The annual lists then follow Ohannes Ferid to Kerpe in 1891/92, then a post with no place named from 1896 to 1910, with a rise to Vali Muavini. For 1892 to 1896, 1897 to 1908 and 1910 to 1911 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1909/10 give a second post, in Lemnos as Mutasarrif, with a rise to Mutasarrif. The last posts were in Canik from 1911 to 1913. The lists give Mazuliyet for 1886/87 and 1908/09 instead of a title.

Pay rose from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 6,000 in 1911/12, as Mutasarrif in Canik, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 351,000 kuruş, 4.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1912/13.
