Life and register readings
Süleyman Azmi Bey was born in Varna in 1845/46 (AH 1262); the father's occupation was "Tırhala kaymakamı". Work began in 1862/63, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, names Süleyman Azmi as Divan-ı Hümâyun Kalemi mülâzımı, with no place. For 1868 to 1870 and 1887 to 1895 the lists have no entry. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1904/05 instead of a title. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 1,530 in 1903/04, the peak, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 30 years of salary come to 404,640 kuruş, 2.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
