Life and register readings
The life of Osman Efendi began in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1860/61 (AH 1277). Work began in Jerusalem (Kudüs) in 1898/99, at about 38, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 38 or older. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Osman as Nafia İdaresi muvakkat kondüktörü in Jerusalem. At the same time, from 1899 to 1903, the lists also place Osman in Harput as Bidayet Mahkemesi birinci kâtibi. The last post was in Silivri in 1903/04.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1898/99, in Jerusalem, when 55 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
