Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Medeni Efendi began in Medina (Medine) in 1860/61 (AH 1277); the father's occupation was "Hicaz Vilayeti mühendisi". The personnel record dates the first work in Mecca (Mekke) to 1872/73, after the first annual entry. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Mehmed Medeni as Sıbyan mektebi ve özel ders öğrenimi in Mecca, where the entries run to 1884/85. For 1868 to 1872 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1911 give a second post, in Istanbul as Şûrâ-yı Devlet Fihrist Odası görevlisi. The lists have no entry for 1902 to 1908. Entries spanning 45 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
