Life and register readings
Petraki Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Ortodoks Hristiyan community; the father's occupation was "Papaz". Work began in Aleppo in 1889/90, at about 23. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Petraki in Aleppo, the birthplace, as Halep Merkez Müdürlüğü hizmeti. At the same time, from 1889 to 1891, the lists also place Petraki in a post with no place named as Cubul Memlehası zabıt kâtipliği. Petraki then moved to Zor in 1892/93. Alongside, the lists for 1892/93 give a second post, in İskenderun as Tezkire kâtipliği. The last post was in Belen in 1895/96. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1890/91 and Azil (dismissal) for 1890/91.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 350 in 1894/95, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 200 kuruş. In all, five years of salary come to 16,800 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
