Life and register readings
Born in Harput in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Karabet Efendi came from the Hristiyan community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Karabet began work in Malatya in 1884/85, at about 22, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Karabet as Tarik peygurluğu in Malatya. Alongside, the lists for 1885 to 1888 give a second post, in Harput as Üçüncü sınıf muvakkat kondüktör. The last posts were in Erzurum from 1888 to 1890.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 500 in 1885/86, in Harput, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
