Life and register readings
Kostar Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Hristiyan community. Work began in Sarıyer in 1892/93, at about 22, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Kostar in Sarıyer as Telgraf ve posta merkezi müvezzili, where the entries run to 1896/97. Alongside, the lists for 1896 to 1901 give a second post, in Tarabya as Telgraf ve posta merkezi yazıcısı. At the same time, from 1900 to 1906, the lists also place Kostar in Büyükdere as Telgraf ve posta merkezi ecnebi memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1905/06 give a second post, in Beyoğlu as Telgraf ve muhabere memuru.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 400 in 1905/06, in Beyoğlu, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 42,600 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
