Life and register readings
Mehmet Arif Efendi was born in Erzincan into the İslam community; the father was a head of a sub-district (nahiye müdürü). Work began in 1882/83 (AH 1300), on a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, names Mehmet Arif as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru), with no place. At the same time, from 1885/86, the lists also place Mehmet Arif in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) as bidayet mahkemesi icra memuru muavini.
