Life and register readings
Kikork Efendi was born in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Hristiyan community. The schooling was at an Armenian school for young children (Ermeni Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Afyonkarahisar in 1881/82, at about 16, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Kikork in Afyonkarahisar, the birthplace, as Afyonkarahisar Sancağı hayvan pazarı müfettişliği, where the entries run to 1886/87. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1893 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Aşar İdaresi kitabet. At the same time, from 1888/89, the lists also place Kikork in Bolvadin as ağnam tadat kol muharrirliği. From 1889 to 1899 the annual entries place Kikork again in Afyonkarahisar.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 350 in 1886/87, the peak, in Afyonkarahisar, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 18,600 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
