Life and register readings
Mehmet Zühtü Efendi was born in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in 1857/58 (AH 1274); the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). At about 16, in 1873/74, Mehmet Zühtü began work in Saimbeyli (Haçin). The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mehmet Zühtü in Saimbeyli as Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı. The lists have no entry for 1875 to 1878. Alongside, the lists for 1874/75 give a second post, in Sungurlu as Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı. Next came a return to Şebinkarahisar, the birthplace, from 1878 to 1882, then Alucra in 1882/83. Mehmet Zühtü then moved back to Şebinkarahisar from 1883 to 1885. Alongside, the lists for 1884/85 give a second post, in a post with no place named as İzin (İstanbul). From 1886 to 1898 every annual entry places Mehmet Zühtü again in Şebinkarahisar.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 473 in 1882/83, the peak, in Alucra, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 350 kuruş. In all, eight years of salary come to 24,276 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
