Life and register readings
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Marunî Katolik community, Nasri Notel Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Aleppo in 1865/66, at about 15. Every annual entry from 1865/66 to 1894/95 places Nasri Notel in Aleppo, the birthplace, first as Rüsumat Nezareti Tahrirat Kalemi hizmeti, from 1894/95 as Mal Muduru. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1888/89 instead of a title.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 1,000 in 1883/84, the peak, in Aleppo, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
