Life and register readings
The life of Mahmud Hamdi Efendi began in Çemişgezek in 1864/65 (AH 1281); the father's occupation was "İstanbul Umumi Hapishanesi eski sergardiyanı". Mahmud Hamdi began work in Çemişgezek in 1881/82, at about 17, on a first salary of 80 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Mahmud Hamdi in Çemişgezek, the birthplace, as Rüşdiye rik'a muallimi, where the entries run to 1889/90. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1895 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Muhasebe kalemi varidat kâtibi refakat memuru. For 1895 to 1901 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in Mazgirt as Mal Muduru Vekili. The last entries, from 1901 to 1906, name Mahmud Hamdi as Rüşdiye hüsn-i hat muallimi, with no place. The lists give Infisal for 1905/06 instead of a title.
