Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1848/49 (AH 1265), Mehmed Ne’şet Efendi came from the İslam community. The schooling was at Medrese, the Islamic college. At about 19, in 1868/69, Mehmed Ne’şet began work. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, names Mehmed Ne’şet as Mulazemet, with no place. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1880/81 instead of a title.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 300 in 1892/93, the peak, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 31,920 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
