Life and register readings
Mehmed Efendi was born in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1843/44 (AH 1259); the father's occupation was "Haffaf". At about 33, in 1876/77, Mehmed began work in Maltepe, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmed in Maltepe as Rüsumat İdaresi kâtibi, where the entries run to 1879/80. For 1880 to 1882 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1879/80 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Rüsum-i sitte memuru. Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 800 in 1888/89, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
