Life and register readings
Born in Komotini (Gümülcine) in 1870/71 (AH 1287), MEHMED GALİB EFENDİ was the child of a clerk (katip). Work began in Edirne in 1889/90, at about 19. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places MEHMED GALİB in Edirne as İstinaf Mahkemesi Ceza Dairesi kalemi mülazımı. At the same time, from 1890 to 1892, the lists also place MEHMED GALİB in Smolyan (Ahiçelebi) as Bidayet Mahkemesi ikinci kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1891 to 1904 give a second post, in Komotini as Bidayet Mahkemesi Ceza Dairesi zabıt kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1895/96 give a second post, in Sultanyeri as Ziraat Bankası sandığı muhasebe kâtibi vekili. The last entries, from 1903 to 1908, name MEHMED GALİB as Ziraat Bankası sandığı memuru, with no place.
The salary went from 225 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 700 in 1895/96, the peak, in Sultanyeri, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
