Life and register readings
Mehmet Zekai Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1871/72 (AH 1288). The first annual entry, for 1891/92, names Mehmet Zekai as Askerî başçavuş, with no place. For 1892 to 1896 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Zekai to Osmaneli (Lefke) and Ezine from 1896 to 1899. Alongside, the lists for 1898 to 1910 give a second post, in Bozüyük as Nahiye mal kâtibi.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 200 in 1898/99, in Ezine, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
