Life and register readings

İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Sivas in 1862/63 (AH 1279), into the İslam community. At about 16, in 1878, İbrahim Ethem began work. The first annual entry, for 1878, places İbrahim Ethem in Tokat as telgraf öğrencisi. For 1878 to 1881 the lists have no entry. Next came Alacahan, Sivas and Diyarbakır from 1881 to 1884, then a return to Tokat from 1891 to 1895. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1891. The last posts were in Mersin in 1895/96 and Niksar in 1896/97. Six places in all, a number reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.

Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 500 in 1883/84, in Diyarbakır, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
