Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Hamdi Efendi began in Antakya in 1867/68 (AH 1284); the father's occupation was "Tımar sipahi ümerası". At about 16, in 1883/84, Mehmed Hamdi began work in Payas, on a first salary of 225 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Mehmed Hamdi as Bidayet mahkemesi kâtib-i sanisi in Payas. For 1885 to 1887 the lists have no entry. Next came a post with no place named from 1887 to 1892, then İskenderun in 1892/93. Alongside, the lists for 1892 to 1899 give a second post, in Anamur as Rüsumat idaresi kâtibi. In place of a title the lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1898/99.
The salary went from 225 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 300 in 1891/92, the peak, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 200 kuruş. After ten years the salary stood below the first, 200 kuruş against 225. Over ten years the salaries add up to 25,800 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
