Life and register readings
Mehmed Rîfât Efendi was born in Medina (Medine) in 1857/58 (AH 1274). At about 8, in 1865/66, Mehmed Rîfât began work, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. Only 19 of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 8 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Mehmed Rîfât in Istanbul as Duhân İnhisarı İdaresi kâtibi (yükleme/yoklama), where the entries run to 1877/78. Mehmed Rîfât then moved to a post with no place named from 1878 to 1884. The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1889. The last post was in Jeddah (Cidde) in 1889/90.
