Life and register readings
The life of Ohannes Efendi began in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1853/54 (AH 1270); the father's occupation was "Halep Rüsumat Müdüriyeti odacısı". Ohannes began work in Aleppo (Halep) in 1874/75, at about 20. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, names Ohannes as Muhasebe Müdürlüğü Kalemi mülazımı, with no place. The annual lists then follow Ohannes to Aleppo from 1875 to 1880, then a post with no place named from 1881 to 1891. The lists have no entry for 1885 to 1890. Ohannes then moved to Idlib (İdlib) in 1891/92. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in Samandağ as memlaha kâtib-i sanisi. Alongside, the lists for 1899 to 1901 give a second post, in İskenderun as Düyun-ı Umumiye kâtibi.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 700 in 1882/83, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
