Life and register readings
Nikolaki Efendi was born in Antalya in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the Hristiyan community. At about 25, in 1889/90, Nikolaki began work in Antalya, on a first salary of 360 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, names Nikolaki as Bidayet mahkemesi azası, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1892 to 1896. Next came Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) from 1896 to 1905. For 1905 to 1909 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1904 to 1910 give a second post, in Amasya as Mutasarrıf muavini. Alongside, the lists for 1909/10 give a second post, in Malkara as a district governor (Kaymakam). The last post was in Zonguldak in 1911/12.
Pay rose from 360 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 2,250 in 1896/97, in Şebinkarahisar, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 303,960 kuruş, 4.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more.
