Life and register readings
Şevket Efendi was born in Burdur in 1867/68 (AH 1284); the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Burdur in 1883/84, at about 16. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Şevket as Ma’a Tahrir-i Vergi Kalemi stajyeri in Burdur, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1896/97. Alongside, the lists for 1896 to 1902 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Tapu kâtibi. At the same time, from 1901/02, the lists also place Şevket in Burdur as Defter-i Hakani Kalemi başkâtibi.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1887/88, in Burdur, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 11 years the salary stood below the first, 380 kuruş against 400. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
