Şintillizâde Mehmed Said Efendi

The life of Şintillizâde Mehmed Said Efendi began in Harput in 1852/53 (AH 1269). At about 21, in 1874/75, Şintillizâde Mehmed Said began work. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Şintillizâde Mehmed Said as Vilayet muhasebe kalemi mülazımı and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1877 to 1879 give a second post, in Asir as Sancak muhasebesi varidat mukayyidi, with a rise to Sancak muhasebesi varidat mukayyidi. Next came Bajil (Bacil) from 1892 to 1894, with a rise to district governor (Kaymakam) in 1884/85. Alongside, the lists for 1893/94 give a second post, in Istanbul as Kaymakamlıkta izin. The last post was in Bozkır in 1906/07. The farthest post, Bajil, lay about 2,650 km from Harput, and 46 of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

Pay rose from 2,000 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 2,500 in 1884/85, as Kaymakam, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years pay ended below where it began, 900 kuruş against 2,000. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 11.7 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
