Life and register readings
Born in Trabzon in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Osman Remzi Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Osman Remzi began work in Trabzon in 1886/87, at about 16, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Osman Remzi as Trabzon Vilayeti Evrak Mukayyidi in Trabzon, the birthplace. The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1892. Next came a post with no place named from 1892 to 1902. For 1893 to 1898 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1901 to 1908 give a second post, in Istanbul as Emlak-ı Hümayun Birinci Şube Kâtibi. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1887/88.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 1,500 in 1907/08, the peak, in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less.
