Life and register readings
Mustafa Zeki Efendi was born in Harput in 1844/45 (AH 1260), into the İslam community. At about 19, in 1863/64, Mustafa Zeki began work. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Mustafa Zeki as Beşinci Ordu Ruznamçe Kalemi mülazımı and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1864 to 1870. Mustafa Zeki then moved to Diyarbakır from 1870 to 1872. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1878 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Vilayet vukuat kâtibi. For 1873 to 1876 the lists have no entry. Next came Erzurum in 1878/79, then a post with no place named from 1879 to 1899. The lists have no entry for 1892 to 1895. Alongside, the lists for 1898/99 give a second post, in Tortum as Vergi kâtibi. In place of a title the lists give Mazuliyet for 1872/73.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 500 in 1871/72, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 102,840 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
