Life and register readings
Mustafa Maruf Bey was born in Diyarbakır in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the İslam community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Work began in 1906/07, at about 25, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1906/07, names Mustafa Maruf as Maiyet Memuru, with no place. At the same time, from 1907/08, the lists also place Mustafa Maruf in Sandıklı as Kaymakam Vekili. The last post was in Bolvadin in 1911.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to a peak of 2,000 in 1911, as a district governor (Kaymakam) in Bolvadin, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less.
