Life and register readings

Ömer Lütfü Bey was born in Dagistan in 1855/56 (AH 1272); the father's occupation was "Kilim tüccarı". At about 18, in 1874/75, Ömer Lütfü began work. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, names Ömer Lütfü as Mazbata Odası mülazımı, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1877 to 1878 give a second post, in Çatalca as Askerî idare muhasebe memuru refakati. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1879 give a second post, in Skopje as Askerî idare muhasebe memuru. Next came five places in 20 years. The last entries, from 1901 to 1910, name Ömer Lütfü as Mutasarrif, with no place. The farthest post, Sirte, lay about 3,000 km from Dagistan, and 15 of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for only 37 of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.

The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 10,000 in 1901/02, the peak, as Mutasarrif, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
