Life and register readings
Born in Aksaray in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Şahmiran Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Şahmiran began work in 1893/94, at about 27. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, names Şahmiran as Mal ve Vergi Müdürlüğü stajyeri, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1894 to 1906.
The salary went from 125 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to 250 in 1910/11, the peak, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 33 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
