Life and register readings
Süleyman Efendi was born in Dagistan in 1869/70 (AH 1286). Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 19, on a first salary of 80 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, names Süleyman as Piyade Dairesi Üçüncü Şubesi Ahz-ı Asker kısmı memuru, with no place. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1891/92 instead of a title.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 80 kuruş a month in 1888/89, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 3,840 kuruş, 20 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1891/92.
