Life and register readings
Born in Sungurlu in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Mehmet Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Mehmet began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 26, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet as Unkapanı Rüştiyesi mubassırı in Istanbul. The lists have no entry for 1893 to 1897. Next came Skopje (Üsküp) from 1897 to 1900. Alongside, the lists for 1899 to 1909 give a second post, in Istanbul as İç Ticaret Malları Gümrüğü stajyeri. For 1906 to 1908 the lists have no entry.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 450 in 1897/98, the peak, in Skopje, when 53 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 11 years the salary stood below the first, 170 kuruş against 200. In all, 11 years of salary come to 30,300 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
